General Description

This is a terrific flowering shrub for warm region landscapes. Cape Honeysuckle is an evergreen semi-vining shrub native to the Cape Province of South Africa. It has glossy dark green leaves and offers flushes of bright orange-red tubular flowers all year around.

The attractive dark-green leaves are compound, small and have scalloped edges. All along the exterior of the shrub, many clusters of trumpet-shaped, orange-red flowers are produced. They appear most heavily from late summer to spring but will show up now and again all year. The blooms draw hummingbirds far and wide.

Grow cape honeysuckle in any well-drained soil type, acid or alkaline. It requires full sun for best form and flowering, though it will tolerate partial shade. It is a tough plant that can withstand drought and seaside conditions. Prune it back mildly after flowering to maintain a neat manageable shape. Otherwise it may clamber over other plants.

Cape honeysuckle makes an excellent hedge, screen or bank cover and is very pretty if trained along an arch or allowed to spill over a retaining wall. The yellow-flowered cultivar 'Lutea' has yellow blossoms and the compact 'Apricot' has apricot orange flowers.
