Family

Bignoniaceae

Botanical Name

TECOMARIA capensis 'Lutea'

Plant Common Name

Golden Cape Honeysuckle

General Description

Glossy dark green leaves and year 'round flushes of cheerful, yellow tubular flowers make golden cape honeysuckle a terrific plant for a wide array of garden uses. It is an evergreen vine-like shrub native to the Cape Province of South Africa. It has glossy, dark-green, compound leaves with small, scalloped edges. Tip-clusters of tubular light yellow flowers appear most heavily from late summer to spring but flower continuously in mild tropical regions. Hummingbirds love its flowers, particularly as a winter food source.

For best form and flowering, plant golden cape honeysuckle in full sun and any soil type with good drainage, acid or alkaline. It is tolerant of drought and seaside conditions. Prune it back mildly after flowering to maintain a neat, manageable habit. Otherwise, it will clamber over other plants and attempt an upward climb. Cape honeysuckle makes an excellent hedge, screen, bank cover and looks very pretty if allowed to arch over retaining walls.
