General Description
Bearing cheerful flowers and handsome foliage year round, this small twining vine from tropical Africa is an excellent choice for greenhouses, mild-climate gardens, and annual plantings. The singly-borne, clear orange, trumpet shaped flowers have five heart-shaped petals that flare and flop at their tips. Hungry hummingbirds visit the flowers. Bloom often continues year-round where winters are mild; elsewhere it lasts from midsummer to frost. The triangular medium green leaves and slender stems are are hairy. This vine behaves as a herbaceous perennial in the coldest fringes of its hardiness range, dying to the ground but resprouting and flowering the next growing season.
Grow this cold-tender vine in full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Partial sun is best in hot climates. Use it as a small annual or perennial vine for a trellis, fence, or pillar, or plant it in a hanging basket or other container. It makes a good groundcover in frost-free districts.
