Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
THYMUS( Coccineus Group)
Comprising all cultivars of creeping thyme that have crimson flowers, hairs on two sides of the stem, and round or oval leaves, creeping red thyme is a mat-forming, evergreen culinary herb long grown in gardens. It spreads by slender creeping stems to form carpets of tiny leaves. From early- to midsummer it bears numerous rounded clusters of bright deep magenta flowers. Throughout the season its savory leaves can be harvested for cooking.
Red creeping thyme is tolerant of heat and drought and grows best in full sun and sandy, well drained, infertile soil. Cut back dead or unattractive growth in early spring. It can take light foot traffic and is an ideal subject for walls, stone patios and walkways, and flowering lawns.
