TIARELLA cordifolia 'Oakleaf'

Image of Tiarella cordifolia 'Oakleaf'

Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

TIARELLA cordifolia 'Oakleaf'

Plant Common Name

Heartleaf Foamflower, Oakleaf Foamflower

General Description

Offering beautiful flowers and handsome foliage, this clump-forming perennial is one of the oldest and best selections of an outstanding eastern North American woodlander. Airy cylindrical to pyramidal spikes of delicate, frothy, pinkish-white flowers open atop erect calf-high stems in spring, creating a foamy wave of color when plants are massed. The large, deeply lobed, slightly hairy leaves bear a passing resemblance to oak foliage. The leaves turn bronze-red in fall, and persist through winter in mild climates. Plants spread slowly to form dense clumps of lush horizontally held foliage.

Provide this shade-loving perennial with organically rich, well drained soil. It is ideal for dressing up exposed ground beneath large old shrubs or shade trees, where color is too often wanting. It also is perfect for the edge of a path or the front of a shady mixed border. Leave the spent foliage until early spring to protect overwintering buds from cold damage.
