Botanical Name

TIARELLA cordifolia

Plant Common Name

Heartleaf Foamflower

General Description

Foamflower is a low carpeting perennial native to eastern North America. Pyramidal spikes of delicate, frothy, creamy white flowers open atop compact erect stems in spring. The lobed, slightly hairy, mid-green, maple-shaped leaves have pleated veins which are often stained with burgundy. The foliage turns bronze-red in fall, and persists through winter in mild climates. Plants spread by runners to form ground-hugging carpets.

Foamflowers are at home in partial shade and moist, humus-rich soil, making them ideal as a groundcover or border subject in the woodland garden. They also work well in containers.
