Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

TIARELLA wherryi

Plant Common Name

Wherry's Foamflower

General Description

Valued for its elegant flowers, handsome foliage, and clumping habit, Wherry's foamflower is a semi-evergreen perennial from the southeastern United States. Pyramidal spikes of delicate frothy white flowers open atop compact erect stems in late spring and early summer, creating a foamy wave when these plants are massed. The flowers are often pink-tinged. The lobed, maple-like leaves have pleated veins which are often stained with burgundy. The foliage turns bronze-red in fall, and persists through winter in mild climates. Plants spread to form dense clumps of lush horizontally held foliage.

Provide this shade-loving perennial with organically rich, well drained soil. It is ideal for covering ground beneath large old shrubs or shade trees, where color is too often wanting. It also is perfect for the edge of a path or the front of a shady mixed border. Leave the spent foliage until early spring to protect overwintering buds from cold damage.
