Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
James H. Schutte
Offering a summer-long succession of frilly flower heads, this tender perennial from the Mediterranean region has long been grown in gardens. The flat clusters of small starry blue, pink, or white flowers appear in late spring and continue through summer. They are held on waist-high stalks over loose clumps of toothed oval leaves. Plants bloom the first summer from an early spring sowing, making them useful as seed-grown annuals. They also often self-sow.
Give this plant full to partial sun and well-drained soil. Where hardy, use it in perennial beds and cottage gardens. It makes an excellent annual for gardens in colder regions. Deadhead to encourage continued bloom and prevent self-sowing. Its flowers are good for cutting and for attracting bees and butterflies. Cultivars include the compact and early-flowering Devotion Series.
