Yellow Star Jasmine
Asiatic jasmine is a tough, easy-to-grow woody vine native to Japan and Korea. Its glossy, elliptical to oval, evergreen leaves are paired on thin, wiry, twining stems. The stems and leaves exude thick white sap when wounded. Leaves may blush red or bronze in cold weather. Small white or pale yellow flowers with flaring twisted lobes cluster along the stems in spring and early summer. They have a dark yellow eye and a spicy fragrance. Reddish bean-like fruits follow the flowers. Flowering usually occurs only on vertical stems, with prostrate plants rarely blooming. The many cultivars including selections with very small leaves and others with pink- or white-variegated foliage.
This somewhat cold-tender vine prefers partial shade and well-drained soil. It will not survive prolonged sub-freezing weather. It tolerates drought once established. Use it on arbors and trellises, for topiary, or as a weed-smothering groundcover. Its relatively small size also suits it for growing in greenhouses and sun rooms. Despite its common name, it is not closely related to the true jasmines.
