Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

VACCINIUM corymbosum 'Jersey'

Plant Common Name

Jersey Blueberry, Northern Highbush Blueberry

General Description

Highbush blueberry is a medium-sized deciduous shrub native to eastern North America and valued both as a culinary and an ornamental plant. In late spring, dainty, bell-shaped flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the many branches. These are followed from early summer (for early-fruiting cultivars) to midsummer (for late-season cultivars) by spherical blue fruits that are delicious raw or cooked. The lustrous leaves turn brilliant colors in fall and the young twigs are red in winter, adding further seasons of interest. 'Blueray' is a compact, vigorous, heat-tolerant cultivar that ripens its relatively large berries midway through the highbush blueberry fruiting season.

Highbush blueberries need moisture retentive, well drained, acidic soil in full sun or part shade. They work well in mixed borders, hedges, wildlife plantings, and culinary gardens.
