Family

Botanical Name

VACCINIUM 'Patriot'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Blueberry, Patriot Blueberry

General Description

A compact, exceptionally hardy hybrid which bears generous clusters of large flavorful light-blue fruits early in the season, this University of Maine introduction is one of the best blueberry cultivars for home gardens and small-scale growers in the Northeast United States. The juicy, slightly flattened, medium-firm berries ripen in early summer. Small pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers precede the fruits. The oval glossy green leaves turn fiery colors in fall. Conspicuous purple-red twigs provide winter interest. The chest-high plants are upright, open, and relatively broad-spreading.

Native to cold-winter regions of eastern North America, northern highbush blueberry flourishes in moist well drained acidic soil in full to partial sun. Mulch around it to maintain moisture and to protect the root zone from weeds and disturbance. Shelter plants from parching wind and hot afternoon sun, and protect fruits from hungry songbirds. This handsome cultivar works well in the culinary or ornamental garden.
