VACCINIUM 'Top Hat'

James Burghardt

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

VACCINIUM 'Top Hat'

Plant Common Name

Half High Hybrid Blueberry, Hybrid Blueberry, Top Hat Blueberry

General Description

Well suited for ornamental or culinary use, this dwarf "half-high" blueberry cultivar combines the larger fruits of northern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) with the compactness and exceptional cold-hardiness of lowbush blueberry (V. angustifolium). The small domed plants bear large sweet bright-blue berries in early summer. They are preceded by small white urn-shaped flowers. The small oval dark green leaves turn brilliant orange and red in fall.

Like all blueberries, this 1977 introduction flourishes in moist well drained acidic soil in full to partial sun. Mulch around it to maintain moisture and to protect the root zone from weeds and disturbance. For maximum fruit production, team it with another half-high blueberry. Shelter plants from parching wind and hot afternoon sun, and protect fruits from hungry songbirds. This handsome shrub is ideal for patios, walls, mixed borders, and containers.
