Image of Vaccinium vitis-idaea 'Koralle'

Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

VACCINIUM vitis-idaea 'Koralle'

Plant Common Name

Lingonberry

General Description

A low mat-forming evergreen from upper latitudes worldwide, lingonberry provides a year-round display of attractive foliage, flowers, and fruits. The compact selection 'Koralle' bears bears deep pink flowers all summer and produces larger and more prolific fruit over a longer season. Oval, glossy, dark green leaves crowd short prostrate branches that root where they contact soil, forming a dense compact cushion. Young leaves often are red- or orange-tinted. In late spring and throughout summer clusters of bell-shaped flowers nod at the branch tips. Large, round, sealing-wax-red fruits that taste like cranberries follow, becoming more flavorful with age. They are used in syrups and preserves.

Grow lingonberry in full to partial sun in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It spreads most quickly in highly organic or well-mulched soil, and requires such soil in warm sunny sites. Use it as a groundcover under trees or large shrubs, on moist banks, or along paths.
