Family

Ericaceae

Botanical Name

VACCINIUM vitis-idaea

Plant Common Name

Lingonberry

General Description

A low mat-forming evergreen from upper latitudes worldwide, lingonberry provides a year-round display of attractive foliage, flowers, and fruits. Oval, glossy, dark green leaves densely line prostrate branches that root where they contact soil. Young leaves often are red- or orange-tinted. In late spring and early summer clusters of pendent bell-shaped white or pink flowers crowd the branch tips. Bright red, round fruits that taste like cranberries follow, becoming more flavorful with age. They are used in syrups and preserves.

Grow lingonberry in full to partial sun in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It spreads most quickly in highly organic or well-mulched soil, and requires such soil in warm sunny sites. Use it as a groundcover under trees or large shrubs, on moist banks, or along paths. The vigorous selection 'Koralle' bears larger and more prolific fruit.
