Botanical Name

Verbena canadensis 'Toronto Lilac Rose'( TORONTO SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Canadian Vervain , Rose Mock Vervain, Toronto Lilac Rose Verbena

General Description

The vigorous and heavy blooming 'Toronto Lilac Rose' was bred in Canada for improved resistance to heat and powdery mildew. All summer it offers large clusters of deep rosy lavender flowers that will brighten up any sunny carefree gardens.

Canadian vervain is a short-lived perennial that originates from the eastern United States and Canada where it inhabits open grasslands and marginal, rocky sites. It is wonderfully heat tolerant, everblooming and will bloom continuously from summer to fall.

This tough ornamental forms large, bushy, spreading mounds quickly. Its crisp dark green foliage is dissected, hairy and slightly lustrous. When the summer temperatures heat up, it becomes laden with large round flower clusters of clean white. The individual blooms are small, tubular, five-petaled. They are highly attractive to butterflies and will bloom more profusely if the spent flowers are removed.

Grow Canadian vervain in full sun. If planted in too much shade it will quickly become leggy and cease to flower. It is amenable to most soils as long as they are well-drained, though it grows best in moderately fertile soil with a slightly acid to neutral pH. Powdery mildew is a problem for most Verbena, though this cultivar is resistant. Still, good airflow and care will help plants better withstand attacks. This fast-growing species is drought and heat tolerant and perfect for tough, hot sites with marginal rocky soils. It is also ideal for containers, butterfly gardens and meadow plantings. Plant it in masses for best effect.
