Family

Verbenaceae

Botanical Name

VERBENA 'L Archer' PP9270

Plant Common Name

L. Archer Verbena, Verbena

General Description

The rosy red flowered Verbena 'L Archer' is a spreading tender perennial bedding plant for warm, sunny beds and borders. This is one of many Verbena hybrids derived from the South American native Verbena peruviana and three other lesser known Verbena species. It is a well-branched contemporary variety developed in Thomson, Georgia by Lenzie Archer. Like most bedding verbenas, it blooms all year around in climates with mild winters and all summer in temperate locations.

This low-growing, spreading ornamental has fine green leaves that are evergreen in southerly zones. When the weather heats up, it produces many colorful clusters of small tubular flowers that are highly attractive to butterflies. To encourage continuous heavy blooming regularly deadhead the plants or cut them back lightly.

Like most verbena, ‘L. Archer’ is drought tolerant and resilient to summer heat and humidity but will perform well where summers are cooler too. It prefers full sun and moderately fertile, amply drained soil. If planted in too much shade it will quickly become leggy and cease to flower. Trailing verbena is primarily used in hanging baskets or colorful bedding containers. It also helps flesh out newly planted beds and borders and to fill in between immature shrubs.
