VERBENA (SPARKLER SERIES)

Image of Verbena (SPARKLER SERIES)

Family

Verbenaceae

Botanical Name

VERBENA( SPARKLER SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Sparkler Verbena, Verbena

General Description

The colorful Verbena in this group are best known for their bright, bicolored flowers and floriferous nature. These everblooming bedding plants are easily grown from seed and have a low, spreading habit. The Sparkler hybrids were bred in California by Bodger Botanicals.

When the weather is warm and accommodating, the verbena in the Sparkler Series produces many colorful clusters of small tubular flowers that are highly attractive to butterflies. The individual blooms are five-petaled, may be blue, white or purple and are marked with flecks of white. They bloom all year around in climates with mild winters and all summer in temperate locations. To encourage continuous heavy blooming regularly deadhead the plants or cut them back lightly in late summer.

Like many verbena, these are moderately drought tolerant and resilient to summer heat and humidity. They prefer full sun and moderately fertile, amply drained soil. If planted in too much shade they will quickly become leggy and cease to flower. Powdery mildew is a problem for most Verbena. Good airflow and care will help plants better withstand attacks. These are superb bedding plants for hanging baskets or colorful containers.
