Verbena

General Description

The colorful Verbena in the Superbena® Series are best known for their showy flower clusters, vigorous wide-spreading habit, and good mildew resistance. Superbena® Deep Blue bears masses of violet-colored flowers.

The low, mounding or trailing stems of this tender perennial are clothed with oval, toothed, mint-like leaves. The hemispherical clusters of tubular, flaring, five-lobed blooms continue all year in the absence of frost and severe heat. Butterflies flock to the flowers. Deadheading of this sterile cultivar is unnecessary, but occasional pinching or trimming will promote branching and flowering.

Like many other verbenas, this cultivar tolerates drought, heat and humidity. It prefers full sun and moderately fertile, amply drained soil. Too much shade results in leggy sparsely flowered plants. Powdery mildew is a problem for most Verbena, but those in this series are resistant. Still, good airflow and care will help plants stay healthy. They are superb for bedding and planters, and spectacular cascading from hanging baskets.
