VERONICA 'Blue Charm'

Image of Veronica 'Blue Charm'

James H. Schutte

Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

VERONICA 'Blue Charm'

Plant Common Name

Blue Charm Speedwell, Spike Speedwell

General Description

Veronica ‘Blue Charm’ forms a mat of mildew-resistant, green, lance-shaped, foliage from which arise many vertical, unbranched spikes packed with tiny, lavender-blue blooms. The fresh, cool-toned flowers of this lovely perennial add color to the garden over a long period from early through midsummer.

Thriving in full sun and reasonably rich, well-drained soil, Veronica ‘Blue Charm’ is somewhat tolerant of drought, but performs best with regular moisture. Its blooms make excellent cut flowers and appear most abundantly if they are cut back when they fade. The vertical habit and floriferous nature of ‘Blue Charm’ make it an excellent choice for container compositions, rock gardens, or mixed perennial borders.

The genus Veronica encompasses a large number of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs, most of which are native to Europe. Veronica species may be prostrate or upright, and occur in a variety of habitats ranging from moist meadows to dry, rocky alpine areas. Small, open, tubular flowers in shades of blue, purple, white or pink are held either singly or in dense to loose, upright spikes. The many forms of Veronica have yielded numerous excellent, garden-worthy cultivars and hybrids.
