VERONICA pectinata

Image of Veronica pectinata

Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

VERONICA pectinata

Plant Common Name

Speedwell, Woolly Speedwell

General Description

The soft, silvery-gray foliage of Veronica pectinata give this sweet, mat-forming speedwell super looks all season. Glorious, blue flowers with white centers cover the plant from spring into summer. An evergreen, sub shrub-like perennial, woolly speedwell is native to Turkey and the eastern Balkan states of Europe.

The small, oval leaves of Veronica pectinata are gray-green, deeply toothed, and sometimes scalloped. The leaves are masked by a profusion of rich, blue flowers from spring to summer, depending on climate. The open, four-petaled flowers have distinct, white centers (or "eyes"), and fade to shades of lavender-blue with age. Smaller butterflies will navigate across the thousands of flowers gathering nectar.

Grow woolly speedwell in full to partial sun in any type of well-draining garden soil. The intense blue flowers and nice gray foliage makes it superb for rock gardens, sidewalk edges, alpine troughs or hillsides.
