Veronica repens 'Sunshine'

Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

Veronica repens 'Sunshine'

Plant Common Name

Corsican Speedwell

General Description

Displayed atop low mats of bright, chartreuse foliage, the white blossoms of Veronica repens ‘Sunshine’ are lightly kissed with lavender. A selection of Corsican speedwell, an evergreen perennial native to the Mediterranean region, ‘Sunshine’ features small, oval, golden-green leaves which are somewhat folded and glossy. The tiny, four-petaled, white flowers are marked with short lavender lines, and appear from late spring to early summer.

Corsican speedwell is an overall tough groundcover plant, and can be grown in average to sand-based garden soils in fun to partial sun. It tolerates some drought but will begin to falter in intense, prolonged dry conditions. Tolerant of light foot traffic, it is ideal for use as a groundcover or between stepping stones, and looks lovely in a rockery or tumbling over low, stone retaining walls. It has a tendency to haphazardly reseed and spread, so its use in a confined, formal garden spot is not recommended.

The genus Veronica encompasses a large number of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs, most of which are native to Europe. Veronica species may be prostrate or upright, and occur in a variety of habitats ranging from moist meadows to dry, rocky alpine areas. Small, open, tubular flowers in shades of blue, purple, white or pink are held either singly or in dense to loose, upright spikes. The many forms of Veronica have yielded numerous excellent, garden-worthy cultivars and hybrids.
