Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

VERONICA spicata 'Heidekind'

Plant Common Name

Heidekind Speedwell, Spike Speedwell

General Description

The silvery foliage and contrasting, raspberry-pink blooms of Veronica spicata 'Heidekind' will add elegance to any garden. Its short candle-like spikes of bright flowers bloom over a long period in summer, and are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

Thriving in full sun and reasonably rich, well-drained soil, Veronica spicata ‘Heidekind’ performs best with regular moisture. Cut the flowers back as they fade to encourage more abundant blooms. ‘Heidekind’ is a great plant for rock gardens or mixed borders, and can even be used as a small-scale, herbaceous groundcover.

The genus Veronica encompasses a large number of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs, most of which are native to Europe. Veronica species may be prostrate or upright, and occur in a variety of habitats ranging from moist meadows to dry, rocky alpine areas. Small, lobed, narrow to open, tubular flowers in shades of blue, purple, white or pink are held either singly or in dense to loose, upright spikes. The many forms of Veronica have yielded numerous excellent, garden-worthy cultivars and hybrids.
