Viburnum davidii
David's Viburnum
This low wide-spreading evergreen shrub boasts pink flowerbuds and white blossoms in spring, followed by berries that change from pink to red to turquoise to deep blue. Native to western China, it has glossy, leathery, oval, dark green leaves with three prominent veins that catch the light. The flat-topped flower clusters open from their centers. Plants are predominately male or female, with both types required for a good fruit display. The clustered fruits are this plant's showpiece. Birds relish them. In fall and winter the leaves often become tinted with bronze, burgundy and orange-red.
Plant David's viburnum in well-drained acid to neutral soil. It prospers in moist soils where winters are not too cold and summers not too hot. Sunlight promotes flowering, but plants benefit from some shade. Use this truly low maintenance shrub in masses or as a focal plant in the mixed border. It is especially magnificent as a large-scale groundcover.
