VIBURNUM lentago

Plant Common Name

Nannyberry

General Description

Nannyberry is a hardy, deciduous woodland shrub with glossy leaves, blue/black berries and reddish purple fall foliage. This often multi-stemmed small tree is native to the eastern United States and extreme southern Canada. The green leaves are attractive and glossy. Butterflies enjoy the clusters of white flowers that adorn the tree in late spring and will give rise to fruits that develop from green and yellow to pink, finally to blue and black. It attracts a wide array of bird wildlife.

Nannyberry is adaptable to a wide array of light exposures and soils. It will sucker from the base trunk, and gives the option of creating either a multi-stemmed shrub or tree if lowest branches pruned away. Use nannyberry to assist in establishing a woodland garden, as a decorative small tree in a shrub border, as a hedge or as an informal large screen. Although the fall foliage can be red and purple, nannyberry does not reliably display these colors en masse across the plant. 'Deep Green' is a cultivar with very attractive leaves and matures to a height slightly less than the species.
