Family

Caprifoliaceae

Botanical Name

VIBURNUM nudum 'Winterthur'

Plant Common Name

Possumhaw, Winterthur Possomhaw, Winterthur Viburnum

General Description

This wonderful possumhaw is named for Winterthur Gardens in Greenville, Delaware and was awarded The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Award in 1991. Winterthur viburnum is distinguished by its glossy dark green leaves that turn vibrant burgundy in the fall. Clusters of creamy white flowers appear in early summer, followed by berry-like fruits that are first green then change from pink to blue and finally black.

This shrub grows best in full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soil but will tolerate soils that slowly drain, too. It is ideal for use in a shrub border, woodland garden or as a screen. To ensure good fruit production, it is necessary to plant more than one shrub for cross pollination.
