General Description

Known for its shiny, large, evergreen leaves and highly fragrant springtime flowers, this large shrub is Asian in origin and a reliable choice for southern gardens. Its flowers are waxy, white and borne in conical clusters. They are followed by berries that turn from an orange-tan color to red and finally black. The berry clusters hang downward, due to their weight, and are very attractive to birds. Winter oftens finds some leaves turning shades of red.

Awabuki sweet viburnum grows best in full to partial shade and is tolerant of many soil types, as long as they drain well. Soil pH is typically not a concern. Older plants may show a good tolerance to drought conditions. Occasional pruning may be needed as plants mature. They can either be selectively pruned to take on a rounded to oval shrubby habit, or they can be limited to a central leader and limbed up as a small tree. Pruning branches will increase next year's flowering and promote bushiness. Avoid sheering as it damages leaves and results in an overall uncomely plant. In coldest parts of its hardiness range it will be winter deciduous.

This evergreen shrub is suitable for large, informal hedges and screens or can be grown as a specimen plant. The popular cultivar 'Emerald Lustre' has even larger leaves, and 'Chindo' is noted for its drooping red fruit clusters.
