American Cranberrybush, Bailey's Compact American Cranberrybush, Highbush Cranberry

General Description

Bailey's compact American cranberrybush (syn. V. trilobum 'Bailey's Compact') is a wonderful deciduous shrub that develops a pleasing round, mounded habit when mature. A close cousin of the European cranberrybush, it occurs naturally in northern North America. Its attractive, medium green leaves are maple-like in appearance and turn brilliant hues of red and scarlet in fall. Many flat clusters of white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, followed by berry-like fruits that turn bright scarlet red in fall.

The best fruiting occurs in full sun, but American cranberrybush can also take part shade, and likes moist soil with average drainage. This shrub is well sized for home use and can be used in a shrub border, as a low hedge, or a foundation plant.
