General Description
Perfuming the winter garden with its clusters of pale pink flowers, this medium-sized to large deciduous shrub is a hybrid of the Asian natives Viburnum grandiflorum and V. farreri. Borne in dense domed heads, the small tubular flowers open from rose-pink pink buds from late fall to early spring in mild climates, and in late winter and early spring in colder regions. The spring flowers are often darker in shade than the fall blooms. Somewhat lanky when young, the upright plants have paired narrowly lance-shaped mid-green leaves which go reddish in fall.
This adaptable shrub does well in almost an well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Remarkably hardy, it performs well in areas such as the southern New England coast. It works well in a mixed border or shrub planting or as an individual specimen. Plant it near an entry, path, or other location where its fragrant flowers can charm and entice passersby. It makes a wonderful cut flower for winter bouquets.
