VITEX trifolia 'Fascination'

Image of Vitex trifolia 'Fascination'

Family

Verbenaceae

Botanical Name

VITEX trifolia 'Fascination'

Plant Common Name

Trifoliate Chastetree

General Description

A large upright shrub native to southeastern Asia and Australia, Vitex trifolia features handsome aromatic foliage and beautiful summer flowers. The leaves of the cultivar 'Fascination' emerge purple and mature to grayish green with fuzzy pale lavender undersides. They are typically divided into three oval leaflets. Crushed foliage releases a peppery scent.

Produced most abundantly in midsummer, but sporadically whenever temperatures are warm, the tiny lavender-purple flowers are held in loose upright steepled clusters. The fragrant blooms attract butterflies and are an excellent nectar source for honeybees. Small black berries are usually produced in abundance.

Grow this fast-growing large shrub or small tree in full sun for best form and heaviest flowering. Moist well-drained soil is ideal, but this species tolerates moderate drought and sandy soils. It also withstands salt spray. Use it as a tall hedge or screen or as a heavily pruned foundation plant. It can also be trained as a small shade or street tree.
