VITIS labrusca 'Interlaken'

Image of Vitis labrusca 'Interlaken'

Family

Vitaceae

Botanical Name

VITIS labrusca 'Interlaken'

Plant Common Name

Interlaken Grape, Seedless White Grape

General Description

Prized for its delicious gold-green fruit, 'Interlaken' is a selection of Vitis labrusca, a hardy, deciduous, woody vine native to eastern North America. An early-fruiting variety, it produces firm, seedless, sweetly flavored grapes that ripen in late summer, a week earlier than those of 'Himrod'. It has attractive deeply lobed rich green leaves that turn burnished shades of orange and gold in fall. Inconspicuous fragrant flowers precede the fruits in late spring and early summer.

Vigorous, tough, and hardy, 'Interlaken' requires less summer heat and more winter cold than do European grape varieties. It needs full sun for best fruiting and prefers fertile soil that is amply drained. This vine grows fast enough to cover an arch, arbor or walkway in one season. Plants must be pruned each year to maximize fruit production. A terrific table grape, 'Interlaken' is also one of the best hardy grapes for freezing and for drying as raisins.
