Family

Vitaceae

Botanical Name

VITIS 'Stover'

Plant Common Name

Seedless Bunch Grape

General Description

Prized for its delicious fruit and its ability to thrive in the heat and humidity of Florida and other subtropical climates, 'Stover' is a deciduous woody vine that produces yellow-green grapes in summer. The result of a complex cross involving American and European hybrids, this 1968 introduction bears clusters of seeded fruits that are good for eating or for making into chardonmay-like wine. It has attractive lobed rich green leaves that turn burnished shades of orange and gold in fall. Fragrant green flowers precede the fruits in late spring. It is normally grafted onto the nematode-resistant rootstock of other American bunch grape cultivars.

This cultivar requires full sun for best fruiting and needs fertile well-drained soil. This vine grows fast enough to cover an arch, arbor or walkway in one season. Plants must be heavily pruned each year for optimal fruit production.

Use 'Stover' as a shade source atop pergolas and arbors, as a wall covering, in the culinary garden, or in vineyards. Numerous pests and diseases can afflict grapes, from mildew, leaf spot and Pierce’s disease to scale insects, deer and rabbits.
