Botanical Name

WEIGELA florida 'Dark Horse' PP14381

Plant Common Name

Old Fashioned Weigela

General Description

Beautiful dark purple-red leaves create a stunning backdrop to the many tubular pink blossoms that cover this flowering shrub. Asian in origin, 'Dark Horse' is also a dwarf form of this popular deciduous flowering shrub.

This deciduous, compact weigela has arching branches and develops a fountain-like habit when left undisturbed. It has elliptical, purple-red leaves that offer little to no fall color. A profusion of beautiful and tubular pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer. These are rose-colored in bud and attract pollinators in droves.

For best flowering and growth, provide 'Dark Horse' with full to partial sun and average to fertile soil with good drainage. It looks super in mixed borders or in informal hedges. Prune it in the summer after it blooms, but be sure not to shear it as this destroys the elegant fountain-like habit of mature plants. 'Dark Horse' is more compact that the standard weigela, so it is also well-suited to foundation plantings and smaller spaces.
