Leyland Cypress
Originating in England around 1870, this intergeneric cross between the Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and Alaskan cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) is a tall fast-growing coniferous tree. Its graceful branches bear feathery green foliage. There are many cultivars of Leyland cypress, including gold and silver leaved forms.
This vigorous tree prefers full sun to partial shade and tolerates salt spray, moderate drought, and a wide range of soil types. Keep its soil moist until it is established. It is widely used for screening, windbreaks and hedging, but can rapidly become too large for its site.
