Yucca harrimaniae

Image of Yucca harrimaniae

Family

Agavaceae

Botanical Name

Yucca harrimaniae

Plant Common Name

Dollhouse Yucca, Spanish-bayonet

General Description

The fine, thin, sharp-tipped leaves of Yucca harrimaniae form tight mounds and spires of rosy-hued ivory flowers nearly indistinguishable from those of Yucca angustissima. In fact, some botanists deem these species synonymous. The small size of the foliage rosettes make this southwestern species ideal for small arid gardens or container plantings. Natural populations exist in desert shrub, grasslands and pinyon-juniper communities from Nevada across to Oklahoma.

In spring to early summer, each compact rosette produces a tall, upright, branched flower stem that becomes covered with bell-shaped blooms of ivory with hints of dusty rose. Its flowers are fragrant at night and attract moths. They are followed by bulbous brown seed capsules that split open and release their brown, flattened seeds later in the season.

This is an excellent choice for high desert landscapes across the American Southwest where full sun and high heat are a given. Always plant in sharply drained soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. This yucca is best suited as a specimen plant for sparse desert gardens or containers. Place it along a stone walkway or rock garden setting that allows its small but pleasing stature to stand out.
