General Description
Revered in Victorian times, Calla lily is an old-fashioned tuberous perennial that traditionally symbolized rebirth. Where hardy, this South African native is an evergreen, clump-forming perennial, but it may also be grown as a tender bulb in temperate zones.
Throughout the season it produces large, glossy medium to dark green, arrow-shaped leaves. In spring and summer, large, showy, creamy white blooms appear. These consist of a large, petal-like structure, called a spathe, which wraps around a protruding floral column, called a spadix.
Calla grows best in full to partial sun and moist, fertile soil. It may be grown as a summer bedding plant, conservatory or houseplant, or in a semi-aquatic garden, and its blooms make beautiful, long-lasting cutflowers.
