Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

Zephyranthes atamasco

Plant Common Name

Atamasco Lily, Rain Lily

General Description

The fragrant snowy white blooms of the atamasco lily appear in spring, well before those of most other rain lilies (Zephyranthes spp.). It is native to moist woodlands, swamp edges and wet meadows from the southeastern United States.

The glossy, arching, grass-like leaves of atamasco lily arise in late autumn from small, long-necked, chestnut-brown bulbs. Large, starry, six-petaled flowers appear on short leafless stalks from early to late spring after rains. A plant blooms for up to four weeks at a time. The solitary white blooms are sometimes purple-flushed. Sporadic winter bloom may occur in mild climates. The flowers are followed by crown-shaped capsules that open to release black papery seeds. Plants go dormant in summer.

Atamasco lily prospers in full to partial sun and moist, acidic, humus-rich soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of several times their width. Perfect for massing in woodland and wildflower gardens, this lovely bulbous perennial also works well as a container plant for cool greenhouses and sunrooms.
