Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

Zinnia elegans( Cut and Come Again Mix)

Plant Common Name

Tall Garden Zinnia

General Description

Summer-garden stalwarts, tall zinnias are erect, bushy, showy-flowered annuals of Mexican origin. Zinnias in the Cut and Come Again Mix bear gaudy double blooms on tall strong stems.

Easily grown from seed, these zinnias produce large, chrysanthemum-shaped blooms in an array of vibrant colors including pink, scarlet, yellow, salmon, and white. They are borne singly on long stems that rise above the leafy plants. The butterfly-attracting blooms continue from early summer to frost if plants are deadheaded. Once pollinated, the flowers turn brown and release brown, flattened seeds that will germinate on their own if allowed to fall to the ground.

Like most of their kind, Cut and Come Again zinnias grow and flower best in full sun and average, well-drained soil. The plants are susceptible to powdery mildew and other leaf diseases, so space them relatively widely to allow ample air circulation. Sow seeds indoors a month before the final frost date, or directly in the ground in warmer areas. Use these zinnias in annual beds, cutting gardens, or mixed borders.
