All-America Selections

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

Zinnia haageana 'Persian Carpet'

Plant Common Name

Mexican Zinnia

General Description

The beautiful Persian carpet mix offers loads of variable double to semi-double, bicolored blooms in shades of gold, orange, dark red and burgundy. The compact, spreading plants are vigorous and will bloom all summer long with good care. This AAS award-winning mix grows well in sunshine, heat and will even withstand periods of drought.

Mexican zinnia has a low, bushy habit and linear, green leaves. Blooming begins in early summer and will continue to frost if the flowers are regularly deadheaded (cut back when spent). In tropical and subtropical regions it can be planted year round. Its pretty orange to golden orange daisies are typically single, though cultivated varieties tend to have double or semi-double flowers that come in a wider variety of warm colors. The blooms are very desirable to butterflies and will bloom well all season without deadheading, unlike other zinnias. The fruits/seeds are short, dark, flat and germinate readily.

Mexican zinnia grows best in full sun, average garden soil with adequate drainage and will bloom only six weeks after sowing. It thrives when temperatures are hot, especially if provided regular water. As the summer wanes, most zinnias develop the foliar fungal disease, powdery mildew, but Mexican zinnia is resistant. This butterfly magnet will add color to any border and is excellent for container culture.
