Botanical Name
Zinnia 'Zahara Double Cherry'( ZAHARA SERIES)
Plant Common Name
Zinnia
General Description
The fully double, cherry red flowers of 'Zahara Double Cherry' are a summer knockout and the plant's overall performance superior. In fact, this outstanding Ball introduction was listed as a 2010 All-American Selections Winner.
Compact stature, excellent heat and drought tolerance and profuse season-long flowering are the three most desirable characteristics of zinnias in the Zahara Series. These warm season annuals come in several colors including orange, pink, yellow and white. According to Ball Horticultural Company, they have up to 20% more flowers than plants in the comparable Profusion Series.
The medium green leaves are produced on well-branched stems. Pretty daisies are borne at the ends of stems throughout the season. They are solitary, double or semi-double and somewhat small. All have orangish yellow eyes. Deadheading is not required but the plants look cleaner if the dry seedheads are removed.
Zinnias grow best in full sun and average, well-drained soil. They are cold sensitive and should be planted after the danger of frost has past. Zinnias are wonderful summer annuals in most locations, however they tend to fare poorly in hot, humid tropical and sub-tropical regions. The excessive heat, humidity and abundant rain can induce rot and cause plants to wither and die. Zahara zinnias are ideal bedding plants and look great in containers. The cut stems are long-lasting and great for flower arrangements.
