One of the first gardening books I bought many years ago was Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. That book got me started with raised bed gardens. It is easy to make your own raised bed garden. Mine are 4 x 4 feet for easy access to my plants. You can make yours bigger if you wish.

Warnings
  • If you want to build raised beds for food-producing plants, never use pressure-treated wood! Pressure-treated lumber can leach chemicals – including arsenic – into your garden soil. Visit the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Website for more information on the EPA’s official take on this issue.

Tips
  • You can use scrap wood for this project. Wood resistant to rot like cedar or redwood lasts the longest.
  • While not required, you may want to line your raised bed to extend the life of the wood.
Tools
  • Only a few tools are required:
  • Measuring tape
  • A straight edge or square
  • Saw, either power or hand
  • Screw driver or power drill
