(Autumn Snowdrop, Early Snowdrop)

Rare both in the wild and in gardens, this small bulbous perennial from southern Turkey is notable for its fall to winter bloom period. Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an ankle-high scape, the white, solitary, honey-scented flower has six petal-like segments in two whorls. The three spoon-shaped outer segments draw back in warm weather to reveal the three much smaller inner segments, which form a tube-like structure. The inner segments have notched tips with a green v-shaped...

(Giant Snowdrop)

Giant snowdrops are very-early blooming, bulbous perennials, native to southeastern Europe. They produce honey-scented, pendant flowers in winter, often through the snow. White flowers marked with green inner tepals emerge on slender stems from a basal clump of twisted, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. The giant snowdrop is better suited to mild winter climates than the common snowdrop. The bulbs are poisonous if eaten.

Snowdrops couldn’t be easier or more rewarding to grow. Plant the bulbs in...

(Snowdrop)

Blooming very early in the year, this long-time garden favorite is a small bulbous perennial found from the Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine. Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an ankle-high scape, the white, solitary, honey-scented flower has six petal-like segments in two whorls. In cold weather the flower closes, indeed resembling a drop of snow. As the air warms the three spoon-shaped outer segments draw back to reveal the three much smaller inner segments, which form a tube-like...

(Snowdrop)

Double-flowered forms of common snowdrop have been known in gardens for at least 300 years, and are often found naturalized both within and outside its native range of Spain to Ukraine. All are small perennial bulbs that produce a single flower in winter or early spring.

Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an erect ankle-high scape, the white, honey-scented flower has numerous petal-like segments in two whorls. The three to six outer segments are spoon-shaped. They surround a...

(Snowdrop)

A double form that has been known in gardens for at least 300 years, 'Flore Pleno' is often found naturalized both within and outside common snowdrop's native range of Spain to Ukraine. Like other common snowdrops, it is a small perennial bulb that produces a single flower in winter or early spring.

Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an erect ankle-high scape, the white, honey-scented flower has numerous petal-like segments in two whorls. The three to five outer segments are...

(Snowdrop)

Blooming very early in the year, common snowdrop is a small bulbous perennial found from the Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine. The heirloom cultivar 'Viridapice' is noted for its green-marked outer "petals." It was introduced in 1922.

Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop a relatively tall, shin-high scape, the white, solitary, honey-scented flower has six petal-like segments in two whorls. In cold weather the flower closes, indeed resembling a drop of snow. This snowdrop, however,...

(Galanthus)

Pendent snowy blooms and relatively broad leaves with a silvery midstripe make this small bulbous perennial a real attention getter in the late winter garden. Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an ankle-high scape, the solitary, white, honey-scented flower has six petal-like segments in two whorls. The three spoon-shaped outer segments draw back in warm weather to reveal the three much smaller inner segments, which form a tube-like structure. The inner segments have notched tips...
