(Holly-leaved Hellebore)

Showy early-season flowers and handsome evergreen foliage are among the ornamental virtues of this shrubby perennial from the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. From late winter into spring, yellow-green buttercup-shaped flowers nod from leafy overwintering stems above lusty clumps of shiny, leathery, jaggedly hand-shaped evergreen leaves. The dark-green leaves have prominent often red-tipped teeth and creamy veins. Several cultivars of this perennial are available including the pewter-leaved...

This evergreen perennial has coarse, leathery, blue-green leaves that contrast nicely with its large, white flowers that appear in late winter to early spring. Its new leaves rise from the crown of the plant each spring. Remove the old leaves as they decline.

Overall, this...

(Foetid Hellebore, Stinking Hellebore)

The foetid hellebore is an attractive winter blooming perennial that produces many beautiful bright green flowers. The delightful blooms of this unfortunately named plant are not particularly stinky, although other parts of the plant have a nasty smell when crushed. Native to western and central Europe, this hardy plant adds a bright touch to the garden when not much else is green.

The evergreen foliage of foetid hellebore is attractive in its own right. The leaves are deeply divided with long...
