One of numerous hardy large-leaved rhododendrons developed by Anthony Shammarello of Euclid, Ohio, this hybrid of R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' and 'King Tut' bears large spherical trusses of apple-blossom-pink blooms that open from purple-pink buds in mid-spring. (Yak Rhododendron, Yakushima Rhododendron)

Here is one of the most lovely and visually interesting rhododendrons! A compact, tightly foliaged broadleaf evergreen shrub from Japan, the Yak rhododendron is endemic to the island of Yakushima, just south of Kyusyu. Here it grows on mountain slopes alongside laurels and Japanese cedars.

Glossy dark green leaves first emerge covered in a pale...

This breeding program was initiated by Benjamin Y. Morrison, the first director of the United States National Arboretum. These relatively cold-hardy evergreen azaleas are complex hybrids involving many Asian and North American rhododendrons.

(New Guinea Vireya Rhododendron)

A magnificent tropical rhododendron with spectacular fiery orange-yellow flowers, Rhododendron zoelleri is native to the Moluccas of Indonesia eastward across the highland rainforests of New Guinea. It is usually found growing in mossy cliffs but also is an epiphyte, growing upon the trunk of trees high up in the forest canopy.

Being a shrub or small tree, there is much variation in growth rate, mature size, flower color and profusion as they are most often grown as seedlings. Their...
